International Links

Caroline Chisholm Catholic College has developed or is the process of developing educational and cultural links with schools in four countries across the world, China, Japan, Italy and the UK.

See below for details of our interaction with these schools in 2009 and beyond

China 2009

Over the past 7 years our College has developed a close relationship with our partner school in China, the 21st Century Foreign Language School (JFS), Jiaxing. A total of thirty six members of our staff have so far visited this school during this time. Staff and students from JFS also visited our College in 2002 and some Chinese students have come to study at CCCC and completed their VCE at our College before graduating and moving to university studies in Australia.

During our visits to JFS, the CCCC teachers are paired with a Chinese teacher of the same area of study. Our staff members observe Chinese classroom teaching methods before discussing the curriculum with their Chinese counterpart. The following day, the CCCC staff actually take a class of Chinese students followed by more discussion of the similarities and differences between the two systems. This is a very valuable exercise from both a cultural and educational perspective as each can learn from the other.

In 2009, our Staff Delegation will consist of the following staff; Our Principal, Mr Michael Quin, Mr Angelo Abela, Mr David Gatt, Ms Jordana McDonald, Mr Paul Sammut, Ms Shauna Campbell, Ms Flor Khoo, Mr Michael Sammut, Ms Tara Ambrosia, Mr Stephen Brasier and Mr Luke Francis. The China tour is self - funded by the teachers and is scheduled during the September holiday period.

In addition to the school visit in Jiaxing, staff will also have the opportunity to visit other of parts of China. This year the delegation will travel to Shanghai, Xi’an and Beijing. Included in the travel plans are teahouses & markets, the wonders of modern Shanghai, the Terracotta Warriors and of course the Great Wall of China. The Forbidden City, Panda viewing, eating Beijing Duck and checking out the venues from last year’s Beijing Olympics are also on the itinerary.

The hospitality of our Chinese hosts is legendary and the experience gained from such an exchange is extremely valuable. It is hoped that many more staff will avail themselves of the opportunity to experience China in future years.

Unfortunately, a scheduled visit to Melbourne in 2009 by staff and students from JFS was cancelled due to swine flu concerns. Hopefully this tour can be re-scheduled in the not too distant future.

England 2009

The College has also begun to develop a relationship with the Caroline Chisholm School in Northampton, England. This year Ms Katrina Wheaton-Penniall and two of our senior students, Bronwyn Warne and Hannah Jardine will travel to the UK to visit our partner school during the September holidays.

The girls will visit London, Paris, Northampton and Bath during this time. Their main focus is to see what school and life is like in England. The girls will be involved in a school program in Northampton as well as having the opportunity to experience a Shakespeare performance in the bard’s home town of Stratford Upon Avon. A delegation from the Caroline Chisholm School, Northampton is scheduled to visit our College in 2010.

Japan 2009

Mr John Daykin & Ms Paola De Simio will lead a group of eight students to Japan during the September break. The students are Terence Raju, Cecilia Nguyen, Denise Doan, Linh Loi Nguyen, Danny Nguyen, Alexander Lytwynenko, Julia Hoa and Tam Thanh Nguyen. The group will visit Osaka, Kyoto, Hiroshima, and Toyko.

Normally the delegation would also travel to Aomori where CCCC has developed a long standing relationship with the Kuroshi school district. Unfortunately, due to the swine flu scare, the school program section of the 2009 tour has had to be removed. Instead the students will tour the Mt Fuji district, one of the most scenic in the country.

The students will still have many opportunities to converse with the locals and practise their Japanese language skills.

Italy

CCCC has only recently established ties with a new partner school in Italy, the Liceo Classico  Europeo Uccellis in Udine. A tour of Italy by CCCC students is planned for February 2010. The group will tour Rome, Pompeii, Florence and Venice and will take part in an exchange school program in Udine. Students and staff from Udine will visit Melbourne in late February 2010.
