One of the key focuses of our College is exploring and being guided by Catholic Social Teaching. The Principles of Catholic Social Teaching involve:
• Preferential Option for the Poor
• Dignity of the Human Person
• Care for our Common Home
• Subsidiarity and Participation
• The Common Good
• Solidarity
Social Justice is one of the ways we encourage students to express our Catholic faith in meaningful ways. We ask all students to get involved in as many ways as they can, focusing not just on ways to get involved, but also how giving back can help foster feelings of belonging and happiness.
Our College runs many social clubs to give students the opportunity to get involved and give back to the community. One of the key programs is our Vinnies Social Justice Group, where students participate in a range of activities through different awareness campaigns and fundraisers. One of the highlights is Vinnies Winter Sleepout. It forms part of the Vinnie’s Winter Appeal and for the students who participates, it gives them a glimpse of the realities of people in our community less fortunate.
Social Justice Committee
The Social Justice Committee believes in upholding the inherent worth of every person and focuses on ways to live out this belief. Our Social Justice Committee support several initiatives around the College, whether it’s sausage sizzles at College events, the Vinnies Winter appeal, providing volunteers for Maidstone Reading Club, raising money for Caritas Australia and at our annual Vinnies Winter Appeal Sleepout.
They also have regular guest speakers, including from Duke Street Community Centre to hear about food insecurities and the rise of people struggling amongst the cost-of-living crisis. Their focus is on raising funds and awareness for those both within our community and beyond our borders, and are largely student run.
Benefits of being part of the Social Justice Committee at our College:
Making a real difference
Students are able to be involved in initiatives that directly impact people
Living Faith in Action
Social Justice gives students a practical way to live Catholic values like compassion, dignity and service - not just learn about them.
Develop Leadership Skills
Students plan events, run fundraisers and lead initiatives within the program. This gives students great opportunities to develop their leadership
skill set.
Building of Friendships
Provide the opportunities to meet like-minded students and staff while working together to towards common goals
Discover Purpose
Social Justice help students understand how their
talents can positively impact the world.
Eco Committee
Our Eco Committee is our student led Ecological Committee. The Committee aims to care for our environment, both within the College and in the wider community. We are proud that for the past two years they have won Rerum Novarum Awards from the Melbourne Archdiocese of Catholic Schools for their initiatives, including increasing native planting to encourage native flora and fauna to flourish, and planting food crops for our local Community Centre.
Each year Sustainability week is a highlight for the Eco Committee, with garden bed art design competitions, a House recycling competition, movie night, and an excursion to CERES to discover sustainable agriculture practices. The Eco Committee is seeing significant growth at the College, with more students every year living out the call of Catholics to be good stewards of the Earth and her resources.
